ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Firstly we would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Bhattacharya for suggesting us such meaningful project and providing the valuable guidance for the same .The classroom sessions were very informative and helped us gain a deep insight for the understanding different aspects of Operations Management. Through this project we could experience our classroom learning & concepts into real working environment.

We would also like thank our colleagues for providing us valuable ideas & suggestions that were instrumental for the completion of this project.

Lastly we are also grateful to XLRI administration for providing us the facilities that helped us gather the required data & material without which completion of this project was practically impossible.

Problem Statement:
It was observed with constant monitoring of Raw Material Receiving system and with Combustion Air Fan System, that lot of running time were not being fully utilized. Due to this unnecessary power wastages were happening, which resulted in financial loss as well as extra wear & tear of the machine. Our suggestion was to eliminate this idle power hour usage through Kaizen.

Project taken:
Possible measures to reduce power leakages:
Arrest leakages in suction chambers Prevent any interruptions in operation Fan stoppage during major S/D
Raw Material Receiving system has 4 parts to feed, namely Blended Mix, Limestone, Solid Fuel & Calcined Lime. There is certain required rate to feed from all feeders, and certain number of feeders to feed all type of materials. Constraint with all feeders is that it can be run only upto a specified RPM.
After doing Why-Why Analysis, our observation was that all feeders were running at its capacity for almost 24 Hrs a day. But the actual requirement for the machines to be in running state was only 5 hrs. So rest of the time, even though the machine were

According to the data provided, there is 50 % of incoming berries which were wet harvested. In the absolute terms, this amounts to 750 bbls/h. The three drying machines can only handle 600 bbls/h altogether, meaning that 150 bbls of berries have to be stored in the bins each hour while waiting for the drying process. The second bottleneck is “located” at the separators. The three separating lines have the capacity to separate 1200 bbls/h, while there are 1350 bbls/h ready to be separated. Therefore, 150 bbls of dry berries have to be stores each…

Step 1 – Identify the BOTTLE NECK – in this case, the 2nd reactor (Fluidized Bed) was the bottleneck at the 4th step of the 7step process. The 2nd reactor is limited to 400 tons per cycle and each cycle takes 4 hours to complete. Since this is a continuous process system, it is important to ensure the 2nd reactor is always full as it has limited capacity. From there, we worked backwards through the previous three steps to arrive at the initial tons of material required for each process.…

There are several reasons for TEP’s inability to deliver all its products reliably within one week. There are 24 machines which are working on a standard (non-overtime) week of 105 hours. As a result, there are 2520 machine hours available per week. There are also more than 500 plastic products, each requiring about 3 hours to set-up (costing Euro 500 per set up), and the minimum run length is 20 hours. Any batch takes at least 23 hours of machine time.…
