Journal Entries for Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Today I started reading Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. I really like how the author describes the background of the story in the prologue of the book. It really helps to understand the story better later on. Jacob, the main character in this book, is kind of a shy kid, and seems like a slacker. He doesn’t seem to want to work hard at anything. I really love how the author jumps right into the plot with Grandpa Portman’s frantic phone call while Jacob is at work. Very excited to read more!

This book is already super intense! I am reading the part of the book where Ricky and Jacob go to Grandpa Portman’s house to see if he is okay, but find him dead, and Jacob sees a creepy monster-like creature in the shadows. I love the vivid descriptions and perfect imagery in this book. Everything seems so real, like you could be experiencing it too. I like the portrayal of Ricky as the bad/tough guy, but we all know that he is super scared too. Jacob’s grandpa left so much unanswered by what he said, and I love the mystery there.

In the second chapter, the mood is very depressing and tense. Jacob says he is plagued by horrible nightmares of the monster-like thing and of his grandpa’s last words. He is very honest with the readers of this book about how he feels, but not with his psychiatrist, Dr. Golan. He also blames himself for his grandpa’s death. I really love how they put small pictures in the book to kind of illustrate it. Still loving this book.

I’m at the part where Jacob is going through his Grandpa’s old stuff and finds the pictures that his Grandpa Portman always showed him when he was a child, of all the peculiar, creepy children. Jacob doesn’t want to believe that his grandpa’s death was meaningless. Jacob seems like a very emotional kid. Near the end of Chapter Two, Jacob decides to go to Wales to try and figure out his grandpa’s puzzling last words. Again, loving the

Jake resents the fact that he is so isolated but doesn't want to take the initiative to change his lifestyle. He resents how neglectful he has been of his daughter, Bernice, and resentful that he has never been able to live up to his father's expectations as a child. When Jake brings Bernice along to finally meet her grandfather, she is effortlessly accepted by him. Jake has always tried so hard to be accepted by his father, but all of his attempts had either gone unnoticed like how "the old man hadn't been around when [he was awarded with a] certificate [in Red Cross life-saving]", or when they had failed. He "[has] always resented that about [his father]; his attitude [towards his frailness]". His father had been somewhat understanding, so he showed it through his polite smiles. The emptiness of those smiles had hurt Jake through the years, stripping…

I was captivated by Jacob’s self-narrated memoir, but I have this unmasked fear of finishing books I enjoy. It’s like I’ve entered this world with great characters but once their stories are finished I must leave. I didn’t want to leave the pages that exposed the truth of Jacob and Marlena’s affection or the cruelties of Uncle Al and August. But the book locked me in and all I could do was turn the pages until I reached page 331 and the story was…

I have mixed feelings about the book, The Boy Who Owned the School by Gary Paulsen. Even though the book has a happy ending, the story is very dark. Jacob the protagonist thinks he is ugly, he is bullied at school, he tries to becomes the phantom student that roams from class to class, he has no friends, his parents are alcoholics and they pay no attention to him, and his sister hates him. If that were not enough, Jacob sleeps in a dark, dingy basement on a cot, while the rest of his family sleeps upstairs. His room is more like a dungeon than a bedroom. Although the book ends with Jacob and Maria going out and with his mother paying more attention to him, I expected Jacob to change and stop hiding from everyone, but the book does not give…

There are so many types of disabilities in our world and it is important to not categorize people based on their disability. For this project, I choose to read the book Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine. This was a very thought provoking book that kept me engaged the whole time. Mockingbird is the story of a young girl who has Asperger syndrome and her brother was recently shot in a school shooting.Throughout the book, Caitlin struggles to deal with her brothers death and has a hard time talking to anyone about the situation. She does however confide in just a few people, one of them being her school counselor. Caitlin’s counselor, Mrs. Brooks, helps her by getting her to talk and work on her social skills. Soon after beginning to see Mrs. Brooks,…

And if you read this novel, I am sure that the storyline will keep you so mesmerised and engaged in the story due to its boundless description that you would feel as if you are actually taking a part in the story and watching every scene take place. Over the past few weeks, I have read Danny the Champion of the World. The book is about a young boy, Danny, who lives alone with his dad in an old gypsy caravan. One day, Danny finds out that his dad has been keeping a secret from him and it leads him to go on an amazing journey. I’ll tell you that it was a very enjoyable book for many reasons, like creative language and a very good story. The author’s way of expressing characters feelings through wording and actions helps the reader to feel and experience the same as the character. Since the book is told from Danny’s view point. You get to see how he feels and thinks about situations and other people. For example, in the book, Mr. Hazell shows up at Danny’s home and he is very angry. “The language he used was so foul and filthy it scorched my earholes.” I mean, what author would use “earholes” and not just ears? Roald Dahl also creates Danny as a wondrous kid by making him seem so interested in every little thing. When he and his dad were walking to the schoolhouse, Danny told how he loved these walks. “Mostly it was he who talked and I who listened, and just about everything he said was fascinating.” From these words and others that Danny says to us, we can get a really good picture on his dad’s personality. Also, it isn’t just like all the traits come out in the first chapter, but throughout the whole book we are still learning more things about the dad. This book was a great read, especially when you need a break from the everyday normal life. This book will brighten up your day and you won’t want to put it down. I give Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl, 5 out of…
