John Willard Marriott was born at Marriott Settlement, Utah, on September 17, 1900. An American entrepreneur, he was the founder of the Marriott Corporation that anchored one of the world's largest hospitality, hotel chains and food services company. The Marriott Corporation became “Marriott International” in 1993. Marriott’s major career began from a root beer stand in Washington D.C. in 1927 and grew to a chain of family restaurants by the year 1932, and then to his first motel in 1957. It didn’t stop there, by 1985, the Marriott Company operated 143 hotels and resorts worldwide, including two theme parks, and 1,400 restaurants and generated $4.5 billion in revenue annually with approximately154,600 employees (Marriott). As of 2008 Marriott International’s revenue was about $13.3 billion with a net income of approximately $696 billion worldwide, while managing about 151,000 employees (Marriott.com). An interesting fact that shaped J. Willard Marriott’s life was “My father gave me the responsibility of a man; he would tell me what he wanted done, but never said much about how to do it. It was up to me to find out for myself." That is how he operated his endeavors for the rest of his life up until his death August 13, 1985. At age 13 Marriott and his younger siblings formed a small business raising lettuce on his parent’s farm. That is where he made his first large sum of money earning $2000 by the end of the summer. Marriott's first foray into the real business world was as an A&W Root Beer franchisee in the Washington, D.C., area. On May 20, 1927, the day aviator Charles Lindbergh began his ground breaking transatlantic solo flight the duo of Marriott and his partner Hugh Colton along with Marriott’s wife Alice opened their nine-stool root beer stand( Marriott.com & Conrad N.
