Invictus is Latin for unbeaten. Originally it is the name of a short poem written in 1875 by William Earnest Henley, a British poet. Invictus is a movie set in the 1990s about how the first black president came to be. Good morning ladies and gentlemen, my name is Abdullah Abdulrazzak and today I will talk to you about the ways this movie shaped my response to how I viewed Nelson Mandela and two other events which took place in the movie. In my opinion Nelson Mandela is a good leader and president because he was just, fair and he always thought about the people first. Furthermore, he brought unity and peace between the black SA. and the white SA. There are two scenes Invictus which helped shaped my response towards Nelson Mandela. In the first scene Nelson Mandela asked his body guard about his family, the body guard answered “they’re fine” and then in return he asked the president, “what about yours sir?” and Nelson Mandela replied, “I have a very large family 42 million”. This shows that Nelson Mandela considers his nation as family; it illustrates his deep affections and concern for the individuals of South Africa. The second scene that influenced my response was when Nelson Mandela’s secretary worries that he will jeopardize the post apartheid democracy by supporting the Spring Box rugby team. She says “you’re risking your political capital; you’re risking your future as our leader.” to which Nelson Mandela replies “ the day I am afraid to do that is the day I am no longer fit to lead.” This shows his willingness to take a chance for what he believes in. it shows his determination to stand up for what is right and make a change. One thing that really surprised me was Nelson Mandela’s rise to presidency. The reason behind Nelson Mandela’s sentence to prison was because he was trying to fight for black and white people to have equal rights. This made me feel that he was trying to do something for the good of his country and was unfairly judged and sentenced. The...
