“I should have stayed with God. I tried and failed, and created a holocaust.” * Jeffrey Dahmer For those who don’t know, Jeffrey Dahmer murdered seventeen men/boys in thirteen years. His crimes involved rape, dismemberment, necrophilia, and cannibalism. Growing up he seemed like a normal, happy child. At the age of six, Dahmer underwent surgery to correct a double hernia, and while also gaining a baby brother, this seemed to be the cause in his change of character. He became quiet, kept to himself and shut out the world, and lacked self-confidence. Throughout his teenage years, his family had moved to Ohio, which caused deeper insecurities. Dahmer’s actions started showing his psychological troubles, he would collect road kill, dissect those animals, and save the bones. In one instance he put a dog’s head on a stake. This was just the beginning of what was to come. Jeffrey Dahmer stated that he started to have necrophilia and murderous thoughts around the age of fourteen. Increasing more than ever, American society is fascinated with serial and mass murderers. Throughout the decades, people have celebrated killers who have reached the peak of success within their field by glorifying them in movies, documentaries, magazines, and even on trading cards. In 1991, a trading card company in California created its first mass and serial card collection, which included notorious murderers such as Jeffrey Dahmer who killed 17 men between 1978 and 1991. Dahmer was known to have sex with the corpses of his victims, kept body parts of others, and ate some of the parts as well. Eventually, Dahmer was sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms and was killed in prison in 1994. . Television programs have also increased people’s fascination with serial and mass murderers by creating documentaries and mini series about them. When I was a little kid I was just like anybody else. I was born in Milwaukee in May 21, 1960, the son of Lionel and Joyce Dahmer. At the age of six after some minor surgery, which coincided with the birth of my brother, there seemed to be a change in me. At the time a career opportunity for my father resulted in my family moving from Iowa to Ohio. I don’t know why it started. I don’t have any definite answers on that myself. If I knew the true, real reasons why all this started, before it ever did, I wouldn’t probably have done any of it. Though the thoughts were like arrows, shooting through my mind from out of the blue. By the time I was fourteen the compulsions to murder and necrophilia began to occur.…

Jeffery Dahmer was born to Joyce Annette and Lionel Herbert Dahmer, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on May 21, 1960. He led a pretty normal childhood, until the age of 10, when his parents noticed he began to become withdrawn from the world around him. Socially he was inept and was extremely shy and awkward. Upon their observations, his parents tried to force Jeffery into interaction with other children, but this did not aid him. Jeffery, however, took an interest in animals from an early age, and he lovingly took care of his family’s dog. In his teen years, however, he began to become intrigued with their inner-workings and took dead animals off the side of the road and dissected them in the forest behind his house in secret. Around the age of 14 or 15, Dahmer later claimed that he began to have sexual fantasies intermingled with his grim dissections of these animals. His father believed his nature as a serial killer was a result of him going through puberty and developing his intrigue and love to kill simultaneously, eventually mixing together to create a sadistic love for murdering. As he got older, his fantasies grew stronger and more focused. He devised a plan to knock out a daily jogger and lie next to him. When the jogger did not show up the next day on his daily route, Dahmer decided not to attempt it a second time. For the most…

Drilling into the skull of a young man he began to funnel a stream of sulfuric acid into the head of his unconscious victim to create a zombie to fulfill all of his fantasies. Dead within a day, he mummified the head of his victim placing it in the freezer beside the skulls of those who came before. Dismembering the remnants of the body he placed skin, blood, and bone into a fifty-gallon vat of acid dissolving what was left of the young man. This is the mind of Jeffrey Dahmer, he murdered not in anger, revenge, or financial enrichment but on impulse and desire. Like many serial killers before him like Albert DeSalvo, Theodore Bundy, and David Berkowitz, psychologists, criminologists, and scientists searched to answer the question of why serial killers commit these mass killings and how they became such violent humans. What is left are two schools of thought, are serial killers born with predetermined genes that play an integral part in creating their homicidal tendencies or do psychokillers become murderous through their surroundings as children? Though it is important to understand how killers become such vicious individuals it is critical to understand what defines a serial killer and what makes them so incredibly different from other homicidal murderers.…
