The Ministry of Employment and Economy is one of the most important and and influential Ministries. It is responsible for encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation, employment and the function of the labor market, as well as regional development. The Minister of Economy is, a representative from The National Coalition Party, 47 year old, Jan Vapaavuori. He is a fresh to the Ministry of Employment and Economy; he started in November when Jyri Häkämies was released upon request. However he has been in the parliament in the past like as the Minister of Housing in the last government, but he has been in the Finnish government since 2006. His past almost came up and bite him, but he is still a strong man today.
Minister Vapaavuori has been on the news lately quite often because of the shipyard “incident” that has been going on. Vapaavuori being responsible for jobs and economy was given all the blame for this incident. What had happened was that STX Finlandia asked to borrow 50 million€ from the government to fund the building of a large Oasis ship in Turku. The public was a bit harsh on Minister Vapaavuor since the parliament voted on this issue, they had a very one minded opinion against plus doing so would have been against some EU regulations. The building of the ship was moved to France and Vapaavouri said that they were to make sure that they would also follow all the EU regulations.
Minister Vapaavuori is said to be a “broileri” or broiler in English, meaning that he has been in politics and government all his life. Born 3rd April 1965 in Helsinki. He started the political life young joining Kokoomusnuoret or Youth NCP as a teenager. He did his military service from 1984-85 and in 2008 he was upgraded to Captain.
