You are the CIO of a major company. The CEO has recognized the importance of IT to the future of the company and is committed to developing an in-house IS development staff. To this end, he asks you to prepare an overview report of 3 to 5 pages for him and the rest of the top management team.
This report should discuss the systems development process and the different methodologies and techniques involved. He has heard about topics like the systems development lifecycle, object-oriented programming, the unified modeling language (UML), structured systems analysis and design, participatory design, computer-assisted software engineering and related topics. He wants you to be sure to include a discussion of potential problems as well. He wants you to summarize this material in a clear and concise manner.
As the CIO for this company it is my responsibility you, the CEO and the Board of Directors, to oversee the development, acquisition, implementation, and management of an Information System that maximizes company efficiency and profitability. To that end I submit to you the following report. This report will discuss the systems development process and the methodologies and techniques involved. Additionally, I will discuss the potential problems we may face in launching our own IS and associated staff.
A modern Information System consists of both hardware and software. The former may be off the shelf PC’s or custom built super computers. The later on the other hand, like a fine suit must be custom tailored to fit the individual. The days of a single programmer pounding out lines of code are long gone having yielded to systems so big and complex that teams of architects, analysts, programmers, testers, and end users must work together to create the millions of lines of code that drive the system.
