Information Systems Development Process
Overview of System Development Processes
To gain a better understand of the proposed direction of the IT Department there are five main areas of importance that need to be addressed before an informed decision is achieved. For brevity purposes I will provide a short description of the key areas: System Development Life Cycle (SDLC), Object Oriented Programming (OOP), Unified Modeling Language (UML), Structured Systems Analysis & Design, and Computer Assisted Software Engineering Programs.
IT Systems Development Life Cycle
Just like any project an organization takes on or plans SDLC is based on sound principles of project management where tasks are managed at various stages; of course these types of projects have an information technology focus. Basically, the process takes place in the following order: System Evaluation, the current system is evaluated by the users of the system and those that have intimate knowledge of the system’s capabilities and potential. The focus at this stage should be on what were the original tasks to be accomplished when the initial design and purchase was made; also what has changed since then that makes an update or change required. Define New System Requirements, during this stage; participants in the proposal must address what the new needs are and what the old system cannot address. Construct or Design the New System, Draft out the schematics of the program and develop supporting issue statements. This includes mapping out the construction or assembly of the hardware and identifying the proper operating system and software. Install or Develop the New System, this phase is where the actual physical construction or assembly of the system takes place. Initial testing using the installers and users occurs during this process; this is an opportune time to hold new equipment training for users and maintainers. It is here where testing happens and the first changes are made.
