ISTANBUL MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
History of the Museum
In 1987, the project of Istanbul Modern arose at the first International Contemporary Art Exhibition, namely the International Istanbul Biennial. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı, founder of Istanbul Foundation of Culture and Arts, impressed by the dynamism of the exhibition and proceeded to establish a modern art museum which is permanent.
The Feshane, textile manufacturing factory on the Golden Horn was transformed into a museum of contemporary art. Although the building was the homeowner of 3rd International Istanbul Biennial in 1991, the project was not able to come through.
Suitable place for Istanbul Museum of Modern Arts was found in 2001: the fourth warehouse on the Galata pier near the Mimar Sinan Academy of Fine Arts. The area had constructed as a dry cargo warehouse for Turkish Maritime Organization and it was converted into a modern arts museum. The building with the area of 8000 square meter was changed by Tabanlıoğlu Architecture with all the relevant functions.
Istanbul Modern is the first private museum which organizes modern and contemporary art exhibitions in Turkey, founded in 2004. With exhibition galleries, photography gallery, library, cinema center, cafe, design store, and its video, educational and social programs, the museum offers a wide range of services.
