Law enforcement in the United States is one of the three major components of the criminal justice system along with courts and corrections. There are many different types of law enforcement agencies from small town police departments to large federal agencies. Each of these law enforcement agencies have many functions and roles that tthey perform on a daily basis. The following will describe the various functions of a police agency. It will compare how the functions of a police agency differ at the federal, state, and local levels. It will also discuss what would happen if the various functions and roles of policing agencies were limited in a community. The primary goal of each police at any level is to ensure that public remains safe at all times. There are many different roles in which local law enforcement agencies take part in on a daily basis. These duties, functions and responsibilities of local law enforcement agencies are broken down into many different roles. Local law enforcement agencies are in place to provide routine patrol of the communities within their jurisdiction, provide emergency services, maintain records, uphold traffic enforcement laws, conduct criminal investigations, planning and analysis, maintain property and keep within a budget. Some other functions that local police departments are responsible for are providing laboratory or forensic investigation, create agendas, provide detention for adults and juveniles, provide public information, alcohol testing, community relations and much more. Local police agencies include municipal, county, tribal, and regional police that derive authority from the local governing body that created it.
