ISPIM special issue on open innovation
Open innovation (OI) has been a topic of growing interest among academics and practitioners for almost a decade. In 2003, when the open innovation debate opened, the initial focus was on large multinational US-based technology corporations. In the following years, OI studies appeared on other industries, smaller companies, and firms in other parts of the world. Clearly there is a need and benefit to extend the arena with new perspectives. The objective of this special issue of Technovation is to contribute to such an understanding. The six papers in this special issue were among an initial selection of 12 best papers relating to OI that were presented at the 18th and 19th Annual Conference of the International Society for Professional Innovation Management (ISPIM is a worldwide network of innovation management professionals from research, industry and intermediary organizations) in June 2007 and 2008. The remaining best papers were published in separate volumes (Torkkeli et al., 2007; Huizingh et al., 2008). This selection was made following reviews for the ISPIM conferences and the authors were invited to update their contributions taking into account comments received at the conferences. The opening innovation article, Open Innovation: State of the Art and Future Perspectives, by Eelko K.R.E. Huizingh sets the stage for the special issue. He addresses the paradigm by tackling questions of what (the content of OI), when (the context dependency) and how (the process) of OI has evolved over time. By exploring the limits of the concept he contributes to both academics and practitioners new insights and potential areas for future research.
