Isopod Essay

The reason for this lab was to understand the scientific method. The scientific method is a process used by scientists to test a hypothesis.
This process includes the following steps: 1.observation 2. Identify problem or question 3.form hypothesis 4. Conduct an experiment 5.analyze the results and 6. Draw conclusions.
This lab addresses the I&Eb standard: “identify & communicate sources of unavailable experimental error.” Where will the isopod prefer to be most often? (water ,salt ,sugar ,or vinegar)
The qualitative features of my isopod are gray segments, black/yellow legs, and black eyes. The quantitative features of my isopod are 9 segments, 14 legs and 2 eyes.

Hypothesis
This lab was set up by placing an isopod in a Petri Dish. It was given a choice of 4 environments (water, salt, sugar, vinegar). The isopods time spent in each environment was measured. If isopods prefer to be around moist areas, I think my isopod will prefer being in water.
Procedure
The materials I used were:
-1 pill bug
-1 Petri Dish
-Filter paper
-Droppers
-1% solution of salt
-1% solution of sugar
-1% solution of vinegar
-Water
The procedure I followed:
1. Cut the paper towel of filter paper to fit a Petri dish as shown in this diagram. Leave about .5 cm between the pieces of paper.
