Research Paper

Today one of the quickest growing religions of the world is Islam. With over 1 billion adherents, Islam is starting to become the world's most popular religion. It is also one of the newest religions forming in the 7th century A.D. Due to it’s growth and misconception about the precepts involved in the Quran, people of other religions are often worried and afraid of Islam’s spread. Perhaps if more were understood about this religion and the people who practice it, there would be more tolerance around the world. Islam, has now become a widely known religion and is continuing to gain more followers in the years to come. Many of the tenets of Islam actually began in the same historical roots as Judaism. Islam began in the Arabian desert in the seventh century. Byzantine Christianity had been a factor in that time and helped develop Islam. The people of Arabia also knew about Judaism, even desert tribes were Jewish. “Another religion that may have influenced the formulation of Islam was Zoroastrianism.” (Hopfe and Woodward 321). Islam was created by the prophet Muhammad of the Quraish tribe. His parents died when he was young, around the age of six, and was raised by his uncle, abu-Talib, who happened to be the chief of the Quraish tribe. Mecca at this point in time was a very wealthy city that “controlled the trading caravans between the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean sea. This gave Muhammad an opportunity to work and travel with the caravans “ (Hopfe and Woodward 322). During this time, Muhammad was exposed to many other religions like Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism. Their eschatology, or The part of theology concerned with death, judgment, and the final destiny of the soul and of humankind, was the same saying that one day the good would be rewarded while the evil would be condemned to hell.
