Even though we might all agree that Wal-Mart is very efficient to shop at there are some big downs to one of our most infamous superstores. Wal-Mart has continually used illegal tactics in order to maintain their large market power and the huge impact they have on our economy. In several cases Wal-Mart has been accused of discrimination in many ways. Also because of Wal-Mart many retailers have been put out of business. All of these facts lead to the answer; Wal-Mart is not good for America.
Due to their large profit making Wal-Mart is indeed the most powerful business's out there, with this comes large power and impact on our economy. Wal-Mart is a corporation meaning many people own it; this is possible by stock shares. Because there are many owners Wal-Mart has a large income making it very powerful but Wal-Mart has wrongfully used their power to eliminate good paying manufacturing jobs. Wal-Mart’s trade with china alone eliminated 133,000 jobs between 2001 and 2006(trade reform, top 10 ways Wal-Mart destroys manufacturing jobs).
Women were discriminated by Wal-Mart for many years by refusing to let them work in certain departments claiming these were "not for women" or a "man’s job" and paying them a lower wage than men or denying promotions due to gender (www.huffingtonpost.com). Lawsuits have been won by women suing Wal-Mart for gender discrimination. In many cases Wal-Mart has also failed to hire needed employees at their locations. In 2009 Wal-Mart paid 17.5 million dollars to settle a lawsuit for discrimination against African Americans.
Wal-Mart is a pull retailer meaning they tell manufacturers what they will sell at their stores and they set prices to their suppliers. Because of this Wal-Mart has the power to put a retailer out of business, in 1944 it put Rubbermaid out of business because they refuse to take the price rise (pbs.org).
