Is Television a Harmful of Helpful Technology?
From the person who invented the television and brought to the society nowadays, it has been a very important device which people can obtain all kinds of information through the mass media. In general, television was meant to bring people up-to-date events from all around the world. It changed the way of people's living for over half a century. Undeniably, the invention of the television is making people to understand the world better. From news and weather report to music and travel, or even the stock information, those ways will connect people to the world closely. Problems of the appearance of sexuality, violence and language abuse are happening a lot in the recent years, and the critics have been making comments about those negative influences. Excluding the negative influences we can be seen on the TV, television is generally a helpful technology in delivering modern information.

From Marie Winn's essay—"Television: The Plug-In Drug" has stated, "Yet parents have accepted a television-dominated family life so completely that they cannot see how the medium is involved in whatever problems they might be having." (467). This is just possibly an effect of how the parents have used a wrong way to take control of their children. Certainly there are examples shown that their children were affected by massive television watching. But if the parents know how to set-up a schedule of when to let their children to watch TV, wouldn't it be better to prevent their children become socially forbidden? The parents can also choose only the educational programs for their children to watch. In that way their children will get the most benefit out of television watching.

People may ask why can't they just log-on to the computer and get the current information straight from the internet. Why type so many keys while the TV is just a button to press away? It is true that the internet can give us all sorts of information as much as the TV. But people can leave it

Ellen Goodman explains how TV affects families in a negative way by using harsh words to emphasize that TV destroys families. She explains through “Primal Screen” that the fact people watch TV is an “addiction” and “the average kid develops that distant, slack-jawed, hypnotic, hooked stare…” (Goodman, 25-26). This explains how kids take TV too seriously in life and take it as a major priority in life. Also, they young kids would create a very bad addiction out of it. Kids in school might not do well because all they think about is TV and get distracted. Another example would be when Goodman states that families have “become an audience and not a family,” (Goodman, 28)”. This means that families sit around a TV and communicate rarely if possible. Families just sit around and ignore each other when the traditional belief of TV is to have family time.…

Television is a big part of everyone’s life, it’s the largest format for sharing information and has the largest audience compared to the internet, radio and newspaper. Television can shape the way we learn for the better or worse. It’s no secret that too much of anything is bad for us and the same can be said about the television. Television can have positive or negative effects on our children. Children learn by watching and imitating adults. Television provides many influences for children that may not be what you wish for your kids. Television has become a "member" of almost every single family on our planet. And not just an ordinary member, but a very important one, because the time spent next to it exceeds the amount of time spent together with any other family member. You do not have to apply any efforts to talk or listen to complaints while “communicating” with it. You do not have to play with your baby son after a hard working day. You can simply turn the TV on and everything is done: kids are quiet, your wife is not complaining and you feel absolutely happy. It is so simple that it has become an integral part of the culture of every family. It is the only time, when a person can forget about all the family troubles and the failures of the day. The sofa opposite the TV set has become the place of “relaxation and spiritual unity” of the family. With television programs—and even a cable channel—designed and marketed specifically for babies, whether kids under age 3 should be watching becomes an important question. Television, movies and other electronics entertainment are not appropriate for children under the age of, even if they seem mesmerized by it.”(Miller, 2013, p326).…

“The Golden Age of Television” brought many changes to America (Bhattacharyya). Modern America is not like America was in the 1940s and early 1950s, and one reason is because of television. Musical shows, children’s shows, movies, news, and so much more are on TV. Television doesn’t only entertain us, but it helps us in so many ways. We can learn from TV. Different educational channels are created to help us learn (Cochrane). TV is a way for us to get information, too, just like books and the Internet. Lastly, television can also affect people and their lives. Before TV, there was more interaction between people (www.printmoment.com). Today, there is not as much interaction and communication between people. As you can see, television helped shape modern America by helping people learn, affecting people’s lives, and brining new ways to broadcast information to Americans.…

You wake up and with a push of a button simply turn on the television set and the day of violence begins. When we need a moment we turn to television for our relaxation time, we also use the television as a way to amuse our children and entertain our spouses. It is such a simple and easy stimulant that it has become a necessary part of the culture and world we live in and pass time of every family. It is the only time, when we can forget about all the family troubles and the difficulties of our day. The sofa sitting across from the television set has become the place of rest, contemplation and place of togetherness for the “family” of the 20th century. People choose sitting down to a movie, television show or sports game instead of playing together, having in-depth talks, eating a family meal together and use this time as their family bonding time. “It is senseless to deny the all-embracing negative effect the existence of television has brought to our lives. But to make our point of view ultimately convincing we will introduce to your attention certain facts that people do not want to accept and often try to justify.” (Steyer 2003) The groundwork for tomorrow’s society are the children of today, and the way they develop reflects how our world will look tomorrow and television has played a huge role in how our children are influenced and developing. The television epidemic has negative effects and these are facts that are well known to all parents, but are ignored by most of them in order to put some of the responsibility for bringing up their children on the shoulders the television networks, movie companies and advertising companies. The modern parent or parents work a lot; have errands, meetings and other tedious tasks. However it is often when they get home from their “busy” day they are not eager to spend quality time with their child. “The consequences of this fact are the following: kids are given to themselves and…

I agree that television shows influences our behaviors even without our knowledge of it. Although television seems like a great thing to have, it has many drawbacks. Television can have negative impacts on people, especially kids. People learn new skills by observing, then utilizing it, such as when we were kids and learn to walk by seeing our family walking around or learning a new subject in school. Therefore, when watching television it may influence our fundamental social dispositions; no matter if it is good or bad. Almost ninety nice percent of households possess one television. Television is today’s source of news, stories, legends, and characters from previous centuries; the reason why it is so influential. However, only “0.7 percent is used for public service announcements and news”(Sex, violence, profanity...). The other 97.3 % consists of television shows with violence, crime, advertisements and mainstream blandness. Many studies and research has been done to demonstrate that heavy television viewing may lead to serious health consequences. Television is great for entertainment but has grown into a major problem.…

At-risk categories are kids and elderly people. The average American kid spends more time watching TV than attending school. Kids eat while watching TV, and they may do the same while doing homework. Elderly people watch TV even more than kids, since this is their main entertainment at home. TV is inherent in our lives. It is natural for a person to enter an apartment, switch on the light, then switch on the TV, and then keep on doing other things. The problem is not with watching - the problem is with watching what: breeding violence and aggression through horror films or being stupefied by silly talk shows of many kinds. TV is becoming one of our main leisure activities, a source of ready-made stereotypes and new myths, a passive view of the world thrust on us from the angle of the camera that may distort the reality out of recognition. We like TV and hate it because we are addicted to it.…

<br>Although there are many benefits of television, American society has most assuredly been adversely affected by it. Since the birth of television, crime has skyrocketed. Many years ago, problems in school were chewing gum and running in the halls. Now, students fear for their lives as our schools have turned into war zones, with school shootings becoming a national problem. Many attribute this problem to the violence children watch on television. Children have become desensitized concerning the value of human life by the many murders and violence viewed on the screen. Television has led to the moral decline in our nation like no other device in history. With the coming of cable and satellite television, Americans now have scores of channels to watch with very little educational value. Many children sit for hours in front of the television, and could not imagine missing a favorite show or movie.…
