What is Phonics?

Phonics is one of the primary building blocks of reading. Phonics is the connection between graphemes, which are letter symbols, and sounds. Before a student can successfully work with phonics, they must have a totally functional understanding of the alphabet. Phonics instruction is to teach students the most common sound and spelling relationships so that they can decode words. Decoding is vital for reading success. If a student does not have a clear understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds, they will not have the tools to read. It is important that students develop a connection between what they see in print and pronunciation to be successful. -------------------------------------------------

Is phonics instruction important?
Students who are poor readers tend to use only one strategy, context and picture clues, to help them understand what they read. Unfortunately this means that they have not utilized a variety of strategies that may be more beneficial. One such strategy is sound to spelling relationships or phonics. As educators it is our job to see that students are provided with this crucial tool. Phonics instruction helps students map sounds into corresponding spellings and this leads to the development of decoding skills. Decoding helps in the development of word recognition which directly influences reading fluency. Reading fluency then directly effects reading comprehension. If students are proficient in the decoding of words, they can then turn their focus to what the words they are reading mean. Phonics instruction also increases spelling ability because it places emphasis on spelling patterns that the students become familiar with in reading. What is the best way to structure phonics instruction?

Phonics instruction should be explicit so that readers of all levels can be reached. Explicit instruction is the most effective style for students who are at a definite risk for reading difficulties. An appropriate phonics lesson should begin with an explicit explanation of the sound-spelling that is the target of the lesson. Guided practice should follow allowing the students to sound out words using the new skill. Students should then be provided with the opportunity for guided and independent reading practice using information that contains a variety of examples using the newly acquired sound-spelling.
