What comes to anyone’s mind when they hear the word kill? People instantly see someone being murdered, and know that it is wrong. Although killing is wrong and illegal, it goes on every day, not only in the streets, but in hospitals too. Euthanasia is a term meaning mercy kill. Even though this is illegal in most of the United States, doctors administer it anyways. Mercy killing is morally incorrect and should be forbidden and punished if it is done. It is a homicide, and murdering another human cannot be rationalized under any circumstances.
Two types of Euthanasia include passive and active or also known as involuntary or voluntary. Passive euthanasia is simply withdrawing treatment to cause death. For example, if a patient needs a certain something to survive, the doctor will not administer that and the patient will soon die. Active euthanasia is taking certain steps to cause the patient’s death. This could be by lethal injection or an overdose of medicine. Another common term used for euthanasia is “assisted suicide.”
Many people who know what the term euthanasia really means, they know that it is used for pets that need to be put down. What some may not know is that it is used also to put humans down also. One would think that this means that humans are no better than dogs or not as important. So is euthanasia comparing people to animals? By looking at it in this way, it takes away dignity and respect of people.
Killing someone just because they ask to be, does not mean it is the right thing to do. There is one major thing that has to be taken in to consideration; like, is this person in his or her right mind? “Mavis is eighty nine and a widow. She is also in a care home. She used to be a brilliant gardener who has won awards for her displays and on her dresser in her room are photos of a well dressed woman smiling as she accepts her award.
