Is Chavez Creating a New Cuba? Discuss
In this essay the current political climates in both Cuba and Venezuela and the recent history that has led to the present situations will be presented, and the statement that Chavez is creating a new Cuba in Venezuela will be discussed.
When analysing both the current state of affairs and recent histories of both countries it is easy to find striking similarities. The most notable would be that of a socialist system with values rooted in fighting social injustice and distributing the wealth equally amongst the people. Castro and Chavez share a very close friendship and Chavez has made it clear that he regards his Cuban neighbour as a mentor and inspiration, and someone who has offered him invaluable advice. Both came to power after previous failed attempts which raised their popularity amongst the people (Castro after the armed assault on the Moncada Barracks in 1953 and Chavez after the coup d’état attempt in February 1992) and upon coming to power both leaders initiated immediate efforts to include their nation’s poor and minorities in the spread of the wealth. Another historical similarity is the inspiration gained from their national heroes – Bolivar in Venezuela and Latin America and Martí in Cuba. Both have followed the ideas put forward by these icons and built on their principals in their political strategies and policies. It is also important to note that neither is threatened by any particularly strong opposition party.
One of the most important similarities that draw these two leaders together is the direct opposition to the United States of America and the Free Trade Area of the Americas Agreement that Washington is trying to impose.
