The Irish Republican Army was organized by 1916 Michael Collins to protest British rule in Ireland. In 1921 Ireland split up into two parts after a compromise with Britain, Northern and Southern Ireland. At this time, Southern Ireland was given its independence. In 1921 the independence campaign had pretty much burned out after the compromise with the British government. Northern Ireland was mainly made up of a protest majority but some Irish Catholics still stayed in Northern Ireland. The majority of Catholics resided in Southern Ireland. The Protestants soon started to oppress the Catholic minority. Remaining Catholics in Northern Ireland were victims of discrimination and were treated as second class citizens. The Irish Republican Army soon started a campaign to defend Catholics that remained in Northern Ireland. As the campaign of the Irish Republican Army progressed, attacks were launched such as assassinations and bombings against the British Government.
