The word ‘holocaust,’ comes from the Greek words ‘holos’ (whole) and ‘kaustos’ (burned), and was used to describe a Jewish sacrificial offering that was burned on an altar. Unfortunately, after 1945, the word took on a more gruesome meaning: the massacre of 6 million Jews by the German Nazis in our second World War. There were many heroes during the Holocaust, but the one that stood out the most was my hero, Irena Sendler. Irena Sendler played a crucial role in securing the safety of many Jewish children through her courageous actions, ideas, and efforts as a humanitarian and social worker who worked in the Polish underground.…

I have decided to write my biography on Susan “Genie” Wiley (the wild child). She was born 1957 in Arcadia, CA; however, her date of birth is unknown only the year. Her parents, specifically her father was an abusive man. He told her family to leave her in a small room and no one was able to talk to her or even play with her. The only thing she was allowed was to get food. Her father, Clark Wiley, even had her windows covered over, so she wouldn't be seen at all. And her mother (Dorothy Irene Wiley) was slightly blind, but did nothing to help and stop the abuse. After Clark’s mother’s death he began to isolate the family. People didn't even know that Genie existed. Also, she had two brothers and a sister who continued to live there normal lives as their baby sister was stuck in a dark, small and empty room. And a few months later the father ended his life because people finally found out all the immoral things he was doing. Of course he ended his…

She has learned that through hard times she can still find the happiness in life and can focus on them. Anne did not just make it through challenging times, she thrived through challenging times. We all should notice that no matter what was going on, Anne was seeing the joy and good in not only life, but in people as well. She showed us who she really was through this life changing experience. Anne demonstrates that we should keep our head held high when we face the struggles of life. If Anne Frank can see the good in things while being persecuted, I know I can. I have learned from the Holocaust that no matter who you are, what you look like, your race, religion, or anything you can think of, we are equal. Now you are probably thinking, “shouldn’t she already know that?” The Holocaust has helped me to see it in a different way. It also showed me how cruel and selfish humans can be and how cruel and selfish I can be. A lesson all humans should know is that we are one. We are equal. Anne once said, “‘I don’t think of all the misery, but the beauty that still remains,’”…

Unarmed forces seems like an unlikely form of resistance, but in the context of the Holocaust, it represents small, individual acts of courage and bravery that resulted in a life or lives being saved. One of these acts included leaving the ghetto and living on the Aryan side, as a mean to stay alive, this was known as ‘passing’. This was supported as resistance because of it’s nature to outwit, defy and ultimately resist the aims of the Germans. The danger of being caught did not stop after the passing of the ‘border’ of the ghetto, but rather changed from the physical tortures in the ghetto to a minefield of mental and psychological warfare, where you are constantly being filled with terror and anxiety that you’ll be recognised or ousted.…
