THE Internet Protocol(IP)
The glue that holds the whole internet together is the network layer protocol, IP(Internet Protocol). Unlike most older network layer protocols, it was designed from beginning with internetworking in mind. A good way to think of the network layer is this- Its job is to provide a best-efforts(i.e, not guaranteed) way to transport datagrams from source to destination, without regard to whether these machines are on the same network or whether there are other networks in between them.
An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. An IP address serves two principal functions: 1/ host or network interface identification and
2/ location addressing.
Its role has been characterized as follows: "A name indicates what we seek. An address indicates where it is. A route indicates how to get there.
