There were times in the course of preparing this report when things were tough and future seemed dark. It could not have been possible to write it without the immense help of all the group members so we all have a great deal of gratitude towards each other.

Executive Summary

The report titled “Investment in Maldives Tourism” discusses the overall scenario analysis of the investment climate in the tourism industry of Maldives, one of the fastest growing developing countries in the South Asia. The report is designed according to the structure stated in the project outline. Tourism is the largest industry in Maldives, contributing to 28% of the overall GDP. Each year more than 500,000 tourists all over the world visit Maldives to enjoy the extraordinary, serene and natural beauty of this coral island situated in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Of the 1190 islands that make up the archipelago’s 26 atolls, 89 islands had been developed into tourist resorts by the end of 2006. An additional 51 islands have been allocated and offered for resort/hotel development. Islands for resort/hotel development have been released across the country, along with plots of land for city-style hotel development in inhabited islands.
