Investigatory Project
Abstract of the study
The study was entitled Combined solution of Garlic (Allium Sativum) and Lemongrass (Cymbopogon Citratus). Specifically, sought to find out how these two solutions (lemongrass and garlic) can effectively kill mosquitoes. It aimed at looking for an organic and safe measure in treating the abundance of mosquitoes. Ideally, the researcher’s study promotes a tandem between science and creation’s conservation. In this project we can do this at our own houses, it is cheaper and it is also eco friendly product. In the Philippines we are experiencing diseases like dengue. As we all know dengue is a deadly disease, we can contribute a little help to kill those mosquitoes, in that way we will not harm our mother earth.
The materials composing the solution were 40 mL of the combines solution of Lemongrass and Garlic. The set up was composed of experimental and control group. The experimental group was being sprayed using a specific commercial pesticide. On the other hand, the control group was being sprayed using the organic mosquito killer. Data were collected to gather relevant information.
In the light of the findings of the study, it was found out that the solution composing of 40 mL solution of Garlic and Lemongrass extract can kill mosquitoes in a short span of time compared with the commercial one. The study hypothesized that the combined solution of Garlic (Allium sativum) and Lemongrass (Cymbopogon Citratus) is more likely effective than commercial product on mosquitoes in terms of the number of mosquitoes that will die.

CHAPTER 1
I. INTRODUCTION Mosquitoes are vector agents that carry disease causing viruses and parasites that lead to life-threatening diseases from one person to person without catching the disease themselves. It prefers people over others. The preferential victim’s sweat simply smells better than others because of the proportions of the carbon dioxide and other compounds that make up the body odor. Over the years, insects greatly contribute much with ecological balance in nature yet it also dramatically causes economic problems like the loss of production the crops due to the damage that they made and the cost of the attempt to prevent or control the problem. Through it, the insects killing agents is created commonly known as insecticide. However, the widespread and long term use of the product resulted in too many problems. One of the easiest ways to prevent insects is to use insect repellant. This is the reason why we decide to make a liquid insect repellant for our Science Investigatory Project. There are many commercially available liquid insect repellant in the market. The commonly used commercial liquid insect repellant in the Philippines is quite unaffordable and uses chemicals that may cause irritation. We plan to use natural ingredients in our Science Investigatory Project. Since the ingredient to be used is natural, the liquid insect repellant to be made is more affordable and environment friendly.…

Malaria affects more than 250 million people and causes more than a million deaths each year (WHO 2005). One important control strategy against this and other mosquito-borne diseases is control, which aims to reduce human-mosquito contact. Different control measures are used routinely against mosquitoes and their larvae, including chemical (eg insecticide), biological (eglarvivorous fish or pathogenic fungi), environmental (e.g. land filling or drainage), and personal protection (e.g. Mosquito repellents formulated as pills, coils, ointments, lotions, and sprays; and insecticide-treated or untreated bed nets) (malaria review.pdf by Enayati A, Hemingway J, Garner P,2010)…

This essential oil proved to be one of the top performers in a comparative study of insect repellents published in July, 2002 in the New England Journal of Medicine. The two commercial sprays tested kept bugs away from 1 to 3 hours. The results of a 2004 California State Science Fair project show that lemongrass is 30 percent less effective than commercial preparations containing DEET, or diethylmetatoluamide, in repelling mosquitoes. Lemongrass, or cymbopogon ciatrus, may still be a suitable substitute for persons who cannot tolerate DEET. A study published on the CBS News website compares natural-based insect repellents against DEET products. According to the news network, natural products like lemon grass and citronella work by scent and must be reapplied more often than DEET-based products.…

More often than not, people buy chemicals to control pests and diseases. But there are ways to control them without spending too much. In fact, some of those can be found right in the farm or backyard. For individuals, studies have shown that coating the body with a jelly based compound including garlic can keep mosquitoes away for some time. Obviously such a method, whilst effective against bites, has fairly major social side effects.…
