Title: Investigation on the antioxidant activity of Mentha aquatica, Curcuma longa, Embilica officinalis, Glycyrrhiza glabra and Nigella sativa

Extracts of five different medicinal plants [Mentha aquatica (Stem and Leaves), Curcuma longa (Stem), Embilica officinalis (Fruits), Glycyrrhiza glabra (Stem) and Nigella sativa (Seeds)]in two different solvents: 80% methanol and 80% ethanol (solvent : water 80:20 v/v) were investigated for total phenolics (TP), total flavonoids (TF) and their antioxidant activity (AA) by measuring reducing power, inhibition of peroxidation using linoleic acid system and 2,2/-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. A large difference was observed in all TP, TF, inhibition of linoleic acid oxidation, DPPH scavenging activity and reducing power of different plant extracts. Total phenolic contents of all plant extracts ranged from 13.87-28.63 gallic acid equivalents and total flavonoid contents ranged from 0.96-16.90 catechin equivalents. Reducing power at 10mg/mL extract concentration ranged from 0.983-1.527. All the plant extracts inhibited oxidation of linoleic acid by 35.90-71.79%, while DPPH scavenging activity ranged from 39.55-80.55%. Extraction efficiency of components with antioxidant property is greater in ethanol extract. Mentha aquatica has the highest amount of TP ranged from 25.06-28.63 g/100g, while the highest amount of TF was observed in Embilica officinalis and the same had the highest DPPH scavenging activity. The highest AA measured by inhibition of linoleic acid oxidation is offered by Glycyrrhiza galbra and the highest reducing power is observed for Nigella sativa.
