Abstract
Computed Tomography (CT) has been around for quite
some time. In the past this technology was mainly used in
the medical and materials technology sectors, but now it is
also used for dimensional metrology. This technology has
the unique capability of non-destructively measuring complete
assemblies, complex structures and inner structures of
an object. Unfortunately there is still a large uncertainty concerning
the accuracy of measurements made using CT. This
paper investigates several aspects that are important in the
determination of the accuracy and reliability of results from
a CT-scanner.
Specifically, this paper discusses the influence of beam
hardening and noise reduction filters used in reconstruction
software, investigates certain grey value patterns that emerge
in the 2D images, saturation of the X-ray detector, warmingup
of the X-ray source, the repeatability of grey values of 2D
images and hysteresis.

1 Introduction
The first CT-machine was invented in the 1970’s, so the technology
itself isn’t something new. Since then, CT-scanners
are most commonly used in medical applications. The use
of CT technology in other fields has been increasing over
