into the world
An individual's own personal choice may hold them back as they try to overcome challenges and move into the world. This is shown by a personal battle with their inner self, personal choice leading to a change in their emotions, different people having different ways of adapting to new challenges, individuals trying to shut off the rest of the world and the help of others an individual's attitude will change as they enter the world. This is shown the the novel The story of Tom Brennan by J.C Burke and in the movie Shrek by (director)

An individual's personal battle with their inner self may hold them back as they try to overcome challenges and enter into the world. The author uses flashbacks throughout the novel from Tom's perspective. These are of the night of the accident and show the reader that Tom is affected by the actions of his brother on that night. It also shows that Tom is held back and has a hard time overcoming the challenges that he faces due to these memories. The use of dialogue between Tom and Chrissy is used when Tom opens up about why he doesn't like to visit Fin. This conversation shows the reader that he is finally opening up about his old life that has help him back for so long. By Tom talking about this with Chrissy he has changed his personal choice and decided he doesn't want to be held back by his old life anymore. Once a person gets control of their inner self then they overcome challenges that they face in their new life as they move into the world.

An individual may try to shut off the rest of the world to avoid facing challenges in their life. This is evident by using a panning camera angle when Shrek makes donkey sleep outside because he doesn't like having people in his house. This shows the viewer that Shrek tries to shut off the rest of the world and this results in him living in a swamp far away from everyone. The use of lighting when all the magical creatures are made to stay at Shreks swamp is very dark and the

    The novel is written from a first-person perspective, revolving around the character of Tom Brennan. As written in the Prologue on page 2, ‘My name is Tom Brennan and this is my story.’ Tom, a typical New South Wales adolescent, enjoys his rugby, friends and normal life. The first few pages, however, reveal that he has lost it all; forced to abandon his much loved town of Mumbilli, his friends and his old life. Once a valued part of the community; now the town despise the Brennan family. The reason is hinted and touched upon slightly during the first quarter of the novel, having to do something with Tom’s brother Daniel. It is later revealed that a drunken night at a party leads to a car accident behind the wheel; where Daniel kills two and turns his cousin Fin into a paraplegic. The family suffer the consequences of Daniel’s actions. All are mentally stressed, especially Tom’s mother- who, after the accident, has never come out of bed. The move to Coghill, and living with their grandmother proves challenging for Tom and his sister Kylie. Kylie struggles with settling in at the new school, St Bennies; and Tom is forced to repeat year 11 because of his poor performance at school. But apart from these immediate stresses, the thing that bothers Tom most is that: he is not himself anymore. He is slightly comforted by rugby and his close bonds with family; but even these are in doubt. Tom’s new rugby team is notorious, known as the team that 'couldn 't catch a cold '.     To an extent Burke also cleverly depicts the concept of misconceptions by introducing Tom as a mentally frail individual who is unable to overcome his brother’s “f*** ups.”” I curled myself into a little ball, hid my head under my knees and let the darkness suck me into its belly.” Through the use of personification, Tom’s isolation from rest of the world is captured negatively evoking empathy from the audience.     Tom’s life is changed drastically when the car crashes. He has dug too deep into what he refers to as the ‘black hole’ and he loses the will to live: “Trying to shut down the bad thoughts that always surfaced and suffocated any hope I had of getting my life back.” (pg.15).     Throughout the book ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’, each character deals with the tragedy in many different ways. Tom becomes depressed and begins to blame himself, he rejects that Dan, his older brother, has committed a crime and is sent to jail, ‘didn’t they realise we weren’t like everyone else here?’ (Page 134).
