A tunnel of light paraded across the ceiling of the dark room then widened as the painted wooden door creaked open. A pitch-colored shadow briskly swept across the invading gleam then without a moments hesitation disappeared into the swallowing blackness of the small room.

A small girl asleep in her princess pink canopy bed was awoken by the loud sound of heavy breathing. The dog like pant sent a furious chill down her spine, slowly streaking throughout her bones like tiny pins and needles. Her heart pounded with the heavy beat of a base drum. As she looked up her dark eyes filled with fear. She slammed her eyes shut convinced that it was her imagination and buried her face into her fluffy, soft, cased pillow, determined to shut out the constant nagging of a disembodied voice. Harshly whispering,it said, “Come with me, come with me Elenah,” The voice retreated to the back of her mind. “I mean you no harm.” She slowly opened her dry mouth to say something but the words wouldn’t come out. “The clock has almost run out” whispered the snake like voice. “Just jump off the bed, I’m in your head but I won't hurt you.”

“Yeah right!” yelled Elenah, “I should just jump off my bed for no reason!”
“Just jump,” said the now soothing voice of someone else. Elenah knew it was a trick but before she could resist she closed her eyes shut and jumped. instead of hitting the floor she kept falling. She snapped her eyes open and didn’t quite process what she saw.

Darkness rushed past her then opened into a new scene. Bright rays of glittering light streamed through the air coming from an unknown source. dark grey rock pillars protruded from thin air in unruly shapes and formations. Elenah didn't know whether to be scared or in awe of the beauty.

“Welcome to my world” whispered the voice in a hushed tone
“Oh goody.” said Elenah in her most sarcastic voice,”The snake is back!” Her voice cracked on the last word for she was still in

My room was dark, like a dark hole. I wasn’t sure about opening the closet. I was thrilled to know what was behind, but scared about finding something I might regret. I put my hand on the doorknob and slowly opened it. The closet door made a worse sound than the one that was coming from it.…

Her laughter sounded like bells and then suddenly, everything had turned into a nightmare. The skies had become dark and a silhouette was behind her. I had tried to call out to warn her, but I was paralyzed, only able to watch as the woman screamed and was taken away. The dark figure had mounted on his horse and turned to me, its scarlet eyes fixated on mine, filled with something that could only be described as hate . NO!…

My body shoots up suddenly and vomit arises from throat. My head is pounding. It feels like it’s banging against the window of a moving bus. It’s an earthquake. I rush to the bathroom, chunks spewing out of my mouth as I run. I hear a creak. My mind registers another presence in the room. I am afraid. I slowly turn my head cautiously, my face frozen is fear, eyes widening as I take in the figure before me. "Beth" I whisper…

This poem is often interpreted as a sad and depressing piece of literature, I however find a different meaning in this poem, a darker meaning. There are many deep hidden meanings within each line of any given poem (usually) and Theodore Rothke had no intention of breaking the chain. In this analysis I will break down a few lines of this poem to reveal the deep shady abyss of concealed messages that is Theodore Rothke’s poem: “In a Dark Time”.…

I woke up in the hospital, the room was stuffy and the air had a undertone of bleach. Beautiful framed pieces of art hang the wall. There were vases of flowers in the room. I look around, every surface was dustless. The nurses were unhurried, they moved with a serene peacefulness from room to room on their rounds. Above the double doors were large blue plastic signs with the area of the hospital that lie ahead. I got this overwhelming feeling of wanting to cry. Brick by brick my walls were tumbling down. The feeling punched through my empty stomach ripping through my bones, guts, and muscles. I knew Ms. Anna would be upset.…
