1. The most important concept to understand about intimacy that I read In this chapter was one determinant if intimacy which is self-disclosure. Self-disclosure consists of honest, revealing messages about the self that are intentionally directed towards others. Disclosing communication contains information that is generally unavailable via other sources. 2. The most important concept to understand about deception that I read about in this chapter was lying. Lies have the potential to provoke a relational crisis, especially if the content of the information lied about is significant. 3. The dimensions of intimacy are, emotional, physical, intellectual, and shared activities. The dimensions of distance are, withdrawal, avoidance, reserved, shortening interaction, restricting topics, restraint, and deception. 4. Research on how gender influences self-disclosure. A female intimacy style is characterized by self-disclosure. Women are more interested in men in achieving emotional intimacy, make emotional commitments, and are somewhat willing to share their most personal thoughts and feelings. This female trait of disclosing personal information and feelings make them more “emotionally mature”, and “interpersonally competent”. 5. One should consider the norms for appropriate intimacy of other cultures when communicating with someone from a different culture. 6. The Johari Window model was developed by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham that illustrates how self-disclosure operates in communication. The four styles of communicators are: open area, which represents the information of which both you and the other person are aware. Blind area, information in which you are unaware but that the other person knows. Hidden area, information that you know but aren’t willing to reveal to others.
