Dr. Erin Watson is a woman who wants to be best in whatever she does. She is a determined person, always working to achieve what she wants. She’s a person who moved to Louisiana from Seattle just for her graduate studies. There is nothing that can stop her. “I never wanted to be a lab technician in the crime lab, I wanted to be the expert” she says, but has worked with many state and federal agencies like the FBI. She sternly says, “Forensic science is a science, not the drama on Television. . . many students have the misconception that a forensic scientist does only the things shown on the TV . . .but it is rather different and complex.” Born and raised in Seattle, she moved to Louisiana in 1998 specifically to go to graduate school at Louisiana State University. She feels proud to have Dr. Lamar Meek as a graduate advisor. He was one of the few forensic entomologists in the nation but he died during her graduate program. Indeed, she has her head held high to be his only graduate Ph.D. student in forensic science in the state of Louisiana. Her family environment was sound. Her mother was a junior high school administrator, and her father was a salesman. She had a good learning atmosphere in her home. However, when she was just in the ninth grade, tragedy struck her family as her father was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 47. Her family moved on through this adversity, but he died at the age of 61 due to lung cancer. Dr. Watson was always a good student who liked biology. “I always enjoyed math and science much more than history and English”, she says with delight. She entered college as Biology major interested in genetics but quickly learned that genetics was boring.
