M7: Assignment 1–LASA 2: Intervention/Prevention Grant Application Report
Since in LASA1 project I have determined to work on the project of runaway teens where there behavior is considered to be a Status Offense under the law of different states including the State of Illinois, therefore I intend for my prevention program project to revolve around this issue and look at different perspectives and ideas to try ands work on solving this issue and reduce the numbers of runaway teens or teens who are at risk of becoming runaways. The project will target both male and female teenagers in Chicago’s Northside public high schools. The agency I have designed to help runaway teenagers is called Youth Runaway Prevention. Youth Runaway Prevention is a national youth outreach program that educates thousands of young people every year about the dangers of running away or trying to resolve difficult, threatening situations on their own. This easily-replicated initiative involves the whole community to provide safe havens and resources for youth in crisis. The agency creates a network of locations — schools, fire stations, libraries, grocery and convenience stores, public transit, YMCAs and other appropriate public buildings – that display the yellow and black circle shaped sign. These locations extend the doors of the youth service agency or emergency shelter throughout the community. Youth can easily access immediate help wherever they are. The agency’s mission is to provide access to immediate help and supportive resources for all young people in crisis through a network of sites sustained by qualified agencies, trained volunteers and businesses. Project Objectives:
1. Investigate runaway cases: investigating runaway cases will be accomplished through the calls intake that’s received by the agency’s hotline where runaway teens will be able to call in annonymosaly if preferred to talk about the current difficulties they’re facing, 2. Discover reasons of running away: when helping runaway teens and teens who are at risk of becoming runaways wether over the phone or face to face, the agency employees and volunteers will try to dicuss the rerasons as to why the teen chose to run away and depending on the circumctances they would come up with a plan that suits every specifc situation where the teen decided to run away. 3. Communicate with schools & parents to identify teens in trouble: in this area the agency would innitiate a monthly meetings with local public high schools in the Northside of the City of Chicago. The meetings will include parents and teachers as well as two representatives from the agency and during those meeting the discussion will revolve around teens who are believed to be at risk of becoming runaway or suffering from any distress or pressure that might lead them to leave their homes and drop out of school. Also any change of behavior would be reported in those meetingd 4. Develop a team of individuals willing to listen and help teens with current problems to prevent running away. This team of individuals would be a set of employees who have degrees in psychology or social work so they’re more capable of helping those teenagers. Although the teem will include a set of volunteers to help with the tasks. 5. Create programs to keep teens & parents involved together and strengthen family relationship between the two: this aspect will also require the community itself to be involved with the agency and be open to create such programs like after schools reading clubs, or sports activities to keep students involved and positive, also these type of activities especially sports will help relaease the pressure and the hormones effects.
