Interpretations of Addiction
What is addiction? People learn many misconceptions of this term, causing them to believe inaccurate denotations. The word is sometimes used colloquially to refer to something a person has a passion for such as shopping, reading, or working. Also, it can occasionally be used interchangeable with the word “obsession.” However, an obsession is an uncontrollable persistence of an idea or an emotion in the mind. Addiction is a chronic or recurrent form of excessive behavior that a person is incapable or unwilling to stop, despite its consequences. There are different forms of addiction, including physical dependency and psychological dependency. Through these categories, a person can be addicted to many things including sex/pornography, drugs, and gambling. Addictions are sometimes viewed as weaknesses in a person’s character, genetically inherited, or found to be a disease. Despite these views, a disease is something that is diagnosed according to physiological causes whereas an addiction is a response to a personality disorder.
Many words often fall under the same category and are hard to distinguish their actual meanings. Such words for example would be addiction, obsession, habit, and so on. These words are frequently used to describe a person’s need for something or someone. For instance, a person who constantly uses drugs or alcohol would be considered addicted. This is due to the fact that even though a person may dislike using these substances, their body becomes physically dependent on them. On the other hand, a person who enjoys riding motorcycles can be seen as being obsessive. The person is thoughts are being dominated by this one fixed idea. One who is addicted is seen as needing a specific thing, while one who is obsessed is seen as wanting a certain object. Overall, an addiction can lead a person to experience emotional and mental complications, while a person can overcome and disregard an obsession.
