Given the definition of ‘human communication’: (the process of making sense out of the world and attempting to share that sense with others by creating meaning through the use of verbal and nonverbal messages.)(1), the development and progress of such has been key to man-kind’s progress. The focus of this course lies upon communication between people with the purpose of building and maintaining relationships. Interpersonal communication is a more intimate form than just conversation with a customer service representative, or a cashier at Wal-Mart. Interpersonal comm. requires an honest approach and true dialogue; one in which the peoples involved are genuinely interested in each other, and intend to develop a relationship.
Interpersonal communication is not only an invaluable life-skill, but a necessity for life. Without it, a person’s well-being will deteriorate. Research has shown that the lack or loss of a close relationship can lead to illness or even death. (1) When a person is lacking a close friend or relationship, the opportunity for intimacy and stress-relieving interpersonal communication is nigh. Being in relationships will most likely lead to arguments from time to time, but when all is said and done, researchers insist that having an intimate relationship is a major source of happiness...
