International Strategic Management
Autumn term 2009-2010
This module provides an introduction to the variety of issues confronting managers of multinational corporations, both within the firms and in the global marketplace. The aim is for students to gain an overall understanding of the issues related to international strategic management, many of which are developed further in optional modules on offer.
The module sheds light on what managers of internationally active firms do in order to retain competitive advantages in very different business environments. The course presents conceptual frameworks that make sense of the linkages between policies and domestic and foreign firm strategies. It examines the particular challenges that managers face within their organizations, and discusses the various options available to mangers in responding to organizational, managerial and technical complexities that the forces of rapid globalisation and intense cross-border competition present.
The objectives of the course include: an understanding of the conceptual and analytical tools of strategic management and economics as applied to international strategy; an understanding of the complexity that accompanies international operations as a result of geographical diversification and changing market and technological conditions.

Lectures
There will be one lecture per week. It will take place on Wednesdays between 11am and 1.30pm. You are expected to arrive on time! Please check the Blackboard website regularly for updates.
Case studies
Dr Elena Beleska-Spasova will be running three case study sessions, in addition to the lectures. Attendance of the case study sessions is compulsory.
