General Definition

Intelligence is a term that is used to describe ones capacity for learning, reasoning and understanding. It involves thinking critically and the ability to plan or solve problems but also to comprehend abstract or complex ideas. Intelligence can also be defined as a process of learning, adapting and transferring. Since intelligence can always change or expand it is not static.

Multiple Intelligences

While giving a general definition of the term intelligence I have come to the conclusion that intelligence is a very complex term. By taking a closer look at the general definition one will notice that it includes the word “involve”. This means that there is much more meaning to the actual word that is being defined. Therefore it is challenging to create a general definition for the term intelligence. What makes it even more complex is that different and various types of intelligences exist.   Each individual is intelligent in their own way and every individual has her or his own strengths and weaknesses. Accordingly, there have to be multiple intelligences.
Let me introduce you to five people that are intelligent in different ways. My brother for example, my brother’s intelligence lies in his ability to prioritize and manage his time well. He makes sure that everything is done and ready to go in a timely manner. This type of intelligence is called the “Logical-mathematical” intelligence. Another individual that is very intelligent is Danielle my host mum. She is intelligent in the way that she is very decisive in the manner in which she conducts business. She plans everything according to a schedule from the beginning to the end. This intelligence is called the “Intrapersonal” intelligence. To give you an example of the “Linguistic” intelligence I am going to refer to one of my friends who is very skilled at expressing herself when it comes down to words beyond the normal comprehension.
