In this assignment, I am going to describe a range of common sport injuries. In Britain it is estimated that approximately 60,270,708 people take part in a sport, out of that amount approximately 231,003 have suffered from an injury. In the United States, about 30 million children and teens participate in some form of organized sports, and more than 3.5 million injuries each year, which cause some loss of time of participation, are experienced by the participants. Almost one-third of all injuries incurred in childhood are sports-related injuries. By far, the most common injuries are sprains and strains. Obviously, some sports are more dangerous than others. For example, contact sports such as football can be expected to result in a higher number of injuries than a non-contact sport such as swimming. However, all types of sports have a potential for injury, whether from the trauma of contact with other players or from overuse or misuse of a body part. The majority of sports injuries are caused by accidents whilst exercising or taking part in activities. Whilst many injuries are more likely than others, any part of the body can be injured. In this task I am going to go into some of the more common injuries with more detail showing knowledge and understanding of the injuries that may occur during sporting activities. Many common sports injuries are named after the sport they are most associated with; such as Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow. These are very similar injuries, caused by the repetition of movement to a certain area of the body. Common sports injuries are generally caused by a failure to warm up properly before exercising. Professional competitors will spend up to an hour with a warm up routine before training or competing, whilst warming down after exercise is just as important. Another way to ensure you are best protected from injury is to follow all safety guidelines with equipment used, and understand the risks you are putting yourself under. Sports injuries can be acute or chronic.
Acute sports injuries occur as a result of a sudden impact or awkward movement. Examples include a cut to the skin or a sprained ankle. Chronic sports injuries develop over time, often due to continual use of the same joints or muscle groups.
Sprains (ankles and knees)
Sprains are common injuries, their symptoms are usually graded according to how mild or sever they are. X-rays are not usually needed to diagnose a sprain. What is a sprain?
A sprain occurs when one or more of your ligaments have been stretched, twisted or torn. Ligaments are strong bands of tissue around joints, which connect one bone to another, and help to keep your bones together and stable. Sprains often occur in ligaments around a joint such as your ankle or your knee. However, the joint is not dislocated or fractured. In a minor sprain, some of the fibres within the ligament are stretched. In more serious sprains the ligament may be torn, either partially or completely. A damages ligament can cause inflammation, bruising and pain around the affected joint. The most common locations for a sprain are the ankles, knees, thumbs and wrists. Symptoms of a sprain.
Common symptoms of a sprain can include: pain around the affected joint such as your knee or ankle, being unable to use the joint normally, or being unable to put weight on it, bruising often occurs along with tenderness, swelling and inflammation. The swelling from a sprain will often occur soon after the injury. However, the bruising may not show until sometime later and can sometimes not even show at all. Bruising can occur some distance from the affected joint as blood from the damaged tissue seeps out along the muscles and other structures, around the joint, before coming close to the skin.
