Infosys was co-founded in 1981 by N. R. Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani, N. S. Raghavan, S. Gopalakrishnan, S. D. Shibulal, K. Dinesh and Ashok Arora after they resigned from Patni Computer Systems. The founders started the company with an initial investment of INR 10,000 or US$ 1172 (exchange rate was 1 USD = 8.53 INR in 1981 in contrary to the popular belief of US $250). The company was incorporated as "Infosys Consultants Pvt Ltd." in Model Colony, Pune as the registered office and signed up its first client, Data Basics Corporation, in New York. In 1983 Infosys corporate headquarters was relocated to Bangalore. In 1999 Infosys became the 21st company in the world to achieve a CMM Level 5 certification.[3] Acquisitions

Infosys ranked among the most innovative companies in a Forbes survey,[5] leading technology companies in a report by The Boston Consulting Group[6] and top ten green companies in Newsweek's Green Rankings.[7] Infosys was voted India's most admired company in The Wall Street Journal Asia 200[8] every year since 2000. Life Insurance Corporation of India has 6.28%. Oppenheimer Developing Markets Fund, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, a sovereign wealth fund owned by Abu Dhabi, and the Government of Singapore also hold significant shareholdings as on June 30, 2012. Infosys Foundation
In 1996, Infosys established the Infosys Foundation, to support the underprivileged sections of society.[13] At the outset, the Infosys Foundation implemented programs in Karnataka. It subsequently covered Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, and Punjab in a phased manner. Infosys has set up a new campus in the state of Orissa near Udaygiri. The new campus is a better equipped than the previously existing branch in Orissa. It will be more energy efficient,will save more water and has a capacity of 15,000-16,000 employees whereas the older one had a capacity of 5,000-6,000 employees. Functioning of the branch is expected to begin from 9 October 2012 and is expected to reach its peak functioning within 1 year. A dedicated team at the Foundation identifies programs in the areas of Healthcare, Education, Culture, Destitute Care and Rural Development.[14] Academic Entente

Infosys' Global Academic Relations team forges Academic Entente (AcE)[clarification needed] with academic and partner institutions.[15] It explores co-creation opportunities between Infosys and academia through case studies, student trips and speaking engagements.
