Today we will learn who invented the Tens Unit and what it was created to do. III. Since I am going into the physical therapy field, I felt that it would be good to research an invention in that field, so I decided to research about the TENS Units, reason being is cause it is a major invention that is being used in the process for anyone that is needing physical therapy. IV. Today, I will be discussing 2 aspects of the TENS Unit. The First one will be who is the one that invented it and the second would be what is it made to do.

(Transition: Now that we have discussed that Dr. Norm Shealy was the infamous inventor of the TENS Unit, let's consider what the TENS Unit was made to do.)

His most noteworthy inventions were the wire precision resistor and a control unit for the pacemaker. Who is the man that invented these items? This man name is Otis Frank Boykin. He was born on August 29, 1920, in Dallas, Texas. His mother Sarah was a homemaker while his father Walter was a carpenter, who later became a minister. He didn’t have any siblings. Otis attended Booker T. Washington High School in Dallas, Texas where he was a valedictorian. He graduated in 1938 and then went on to Fisk University on a scholarship. Boykin only went to the university for three years and he graduated in 1941. Within the same year, he worked as a lab assistant with the Majestic Radio and TV Corporation in Chicago, Illinois. He served as a supervisor there. Eventually he took a position with the P.J. Nilsen Research Laboratories while trying to start his own business, Boykin-Fruth Incorporated. While trying to start up his own business, he decided to continue his education at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois. He had to drop out in 1947 because he couldn’t afford tuition. Boykin had an interest in working with resistors and he began researching and inventing on his own. He received a patent for a wire precision resistor on June 16, 1959. The resistor would later be used in radios and televisions. In 1961, he created a cheaper device that could withstand extreme changes in temperature and pressure. This device was used by the United States military for guided missiles and IBM for computers. He moved to Paris in 1964, where he created electronic innovations for a new market of customers. His most famous invention was a control unit for the pacemaker. It wasn’t easy for Boykin to achieve all of these accomplishments. The problems he faced was not having enough money to stay in college, his business he owned failing and growing up in a segregated time. I benefited from his efforts by now having a choice to get a pacemaker if something bad goes wrong with…

Now it is my time to decide my future paths. When I think about what I want to be, I want something that would allow me to make a difference in people's lives, all the while having the ability to do different things. I feel that being a PTA would allow me to do both. I will not only get to work with patients who are battling diseases and injuries, but also loss of mobility. It will be my duty, along with the supervision of a Physical Therapist, to get them back to maximum functioning and hopefully live a normal and productive life. I want to be able to say that when I return a patient back to their family and lives, I improved them to a much better condition than when I initially met them. With this profession, I know that my patients and procedures will be ever changing. To me, this means my quest for knowledge will forever…

I was a junior in high school during basketball season with no plans for college. It was the fourth game of the season with eight seconds to go in the fourth quarter, when I cut down the middle to go up for a shot and ended up on the ground from a player striking the side of my knee. After three trainers and two doctors looked at my knee I got news back that it was an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear, meaning surgery and that I was done with sports until my senior year. After surgery, I had a weekend of rest then started physical therapy. I attended physical therapy three times a week for two hours as well as doing at home exercises. I enjoyed seeing all that a therapist does and how they help people get back to where they were before. I was incredibly grateful for all they did for me getting me ready in time for summer volleyball for my senior year. I started to research all about a Physical Therapist and came across Physical Therapy Assistant, which I found more interesting mainly because it was less schooling. I had decided this is what I wanted to do and go to college for. Once senior year started, I did an internship with the facility I had gone to for therapy. I loved the environment and how the workers all communicated and got along. Getting to help people every day get their range of motion back and watching all the progress they make over the weeks was inspiring and that is what I wanted to see every day in my…
