Business Processes and Information Systems
Most medium to large organizations create an Information Technology (IT) office.   However, IT is the collection of information by software and computers.   Although the meaning of IT has this meaning, companies use their IT office as an Information Systems Management office.   Information Systems (IS) supports the business processes in organizations. This paper will state how IS supports the business processes in organizations.   This paper will also state the business process within the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), strengths and weaknesses of the IS, and how to improve the FRA IS.
FRA supports the Department of Transportation (DOT) in developing a standard for rail safety regulations, conduct research and development to enhance railroad safety, and enforce those railroad standards.   The IS support FRA’s business processes by planning, developing, and administering innovative activities and programs to ensure operational efficiency and compliance with federal regulations and laws.   These programs and activities include quality management, organizational structure, internal control review, strategic planning, information resources management, and performance management.  
The FRA created a new division in the safety office called the Knowledge Management Office.   The Knowledge Management Office consists of teams from the IS office and the safety office.   FRA believes that combining these two offices will allow the Knowledge Management Office to collect data from FRA’s five disciplines that includes Operating Practices, Hazardous Materials, Signal and Train Control, Track and Structures, and Motive Power and Equipment.   The raw data is input into the Knowledge Management database, cleaned and processed, and placed in a separate database for the agency to have complete access.   All rail-related incident and accident data is analyzed and then converted into meaningful charts, statistical tables, and reports (United...
