INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY
Nowadays technology has a great impact on almost every industry. Quickshop is a retail store selling household items and grocery. It is one point stop for customers who need to buy household items. Recently, the Managing Director of the store has decided to invest on technology to further improve the efficiency in operations. As an IT consultant, I has been hired to expain the importance of planning IS/IT, the pros and cons of technology to the Managing Director and analysis the impact technology will have on Quickshop. Furthermore, I also recommend systems that will be appropriate fir the Quickshop.
The phrase “technology revolution” has become a bit of a cliché. Everyone agrees that technology has impacted the lives of 21st century people dramatically. Ways of communicating and processing information thought to be impossible a few short year ago commoplace today. No company can long survive in todat’s business environment without some technology. No business person can expect career growth without a working knowledge of technology, especially as it interfaces with the all important task of building customer loyalty (Tim, P. R & Jones, C.G 2005). Therefore, it is very important for the retail shop to plan IS/IT in order to survive and compete with others. Having a good IS/IT helps the organisation a lot in running their business effectively.
The main purpose of investing on technology of the retail shop is to further improve the efficiency in operations. The Managing Director expects the system will help the business to manage their employees, distribute relationshion with their suppliers and also provide customers good services, products and experiences. The operational activities of retailing were seen to be the purchasing of products, their storage and ultimately sale to the consumers. There are two components of the retail supply chain: - The external supply chain: includes such aspects as sourcing, supplier distributor relationship, merchandising and strategic and operational partnership. - The internal supply chain: consists of activities relate to relationship between the retailer’s central warehouses and the individual stores. The investment is for a long-term purpose so it needs to be planned well.

The principle purpose of systems at this level is to answer routine questions and track the flow of transactions through the organisation. • Knowledge-level Systems
– Support knowledge and data workers in an organisation. The purpose of these systems is to help the organisation discover, organise and integrate new and existing knowledge in to the business, and to help control the flow of paperwork. These systems, specially in the form of collaboration tools, workstations, and office systems, are the fastest growing applications in business today.
