Executive Summary:
This report uses extensive secondary research and critical analysis of the IT strategy of Facebook, a leader and an iconic organization in the domain of social networking, and zero in on the drivers of differentiation and thus evaluate the impact of the sustainable competitive strategies. The report also after holistic analysis suggests actions that the organization could undertake for further enhancements. It emerged that though Facebook has a number of sustainable competitive advantages because of highly effective seamless integration, technology lever and partnerships, proprietary game changing applications for both mass as well as niche markets, unique business models, high benchmarks and compliances to the ISO requirements and data security and the usage of sophisticated business intelligence and analytical tools to gain insights through demographic as well as socio-economic-behavioral profiling a number of recommendations could be followed in order to further enhance the market share, penetration and revenues and thus curb away any future competition. Information System is defined as the holistic processes that has the propensity of collecting, accumulating, developing and collating raw information or data from different platforms and sources and thus integrate and communicate to the right channels using different hardware, database, software, network structure and other related components (Kaur, 2011). The information system has become the most significant factor in building organization’s overall effectiveness and the main differentiator in terms of developing a sustainable competitive strategy for the existence and the growth for the organizations vigorously competing in various spaces of the particular domain (Chaffey, 2010). It has all the more important in the domain of social media and networking where the interactions and integrations from different sources and mediums through a seamless IT structure handling huge and complex data and using them to gain continuous insights and create new dimensions and benchmarks through an unified communications process (ICT) is the key to propel growth (Kim, 2003). One of the most important differentiators or competitive advantage that Facebook have achieved is incorporation and integration of different technology spearheads of different organizations by acquiring them through acquisitions or forming joint ventures or partnerships thus fully exploiting the technology leverage thus having a continuous portfolio of products developed generating new revenue streams by reaching to expanded markets and thus creating huge barriers for the competitors (Facebook Technical Analysis Report by Dave O’ Reilly, December 2011).
