Diversity, cultural differences, and social norms are important today as ever before. Many workplaces consist of individuals from different racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, and social backgrounds. Synergy between these different perspective and paradigms are important not only to the health of the workplace but also the stability, productivity, and efficiency of the business. Differences in mediocre things such as food choices can lead to serious break down in efficiency through dispute between individuals from different backgrounds. While many businesses focus on tangible concerns such as theft, proprietary security, and adherence to protected status laws; communication breakdowns and behavioral concerns can pose a great risk as well. Issues arising from the aforementioned challenges can pose a substantial risk for the business involved if they are not resolve expeditiously.
Within this paper I will discuss the issues between the co-workers and the various challenges they pose to the employer if not resolved. In addition to recognizing the issues between the individuals in the reading assignment scenario; I will also propose solutions based on the details evident in the reading.
I immediately recognized that Susan and Molly are displaying cultural and diversity indifference towards Karishma. The indifference Susan and Molly are displaying against Karishima is in part due to Karishima unique characteristics reflected in her accent and attire. Susan and Molly’s behavior not only creates a hostile work environment for Karishma, but also created a potential legal situation for the employer. Susan and Molly’s actions are potentially discriminatory and bias. This situation introduces the workplace conflict.
