“No one can whistle a symphony. It takes an orchestra to play it.” Importance of Groups and Team has become a major focus in the business world. Organizations have well realized that the evolution from individual to team management approach is a priority in current time. The reality is that much of the organizations work is accomplished directly or indirectly through teams. Teams are used as means of growing effectiveness and efficiency in many organizations. Group procedure and conflicts directly impact the choice of team member selection and required results. Creating an effective team is an art and a science. Any organization is constantly changing and evolving. Change is good and the ability of an organization to adapt and be flexible helps stimulate the organizations growth. ‘A work group is a number of persons, usually reporting to a common superior and having some face-to-face interactions, who have some degree of interdependence in carrying out tasks for the purpose of achieving organizational goals, whereas a team on the other hand has some distinctiveness higher to that of an ordinary group, including higher degree of symbiosis and interaction and higher commitments to achieve organization goals. Therefore, according to John Katzenbach and Douglas Smith, ‘a team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, set of performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.
In today’s competitive world where every organization is striving to gain the best position in the market the concept of Group Development and Teamwork are steadily gaining importance. Individual decision making has taken a back stage and paved the way for team management approach for problem solving and decision making which has been productive for the organizations. This strategy not only benefits the organization but also the individual employee, hence it’s been rapidly adopted by businesses. But is it appropriate to say that the
individual decision making really taking a back stage. In fact the individual behavioral dynamics provides a precursor and perfect bedrock for team dynamics. So in this discussion we have tried to relate various aspects of Individual behavior with team dynamic and performance. Personality & Team Building:
It is said that “Birds of same feathers flocks Together”. When we think of a team, what comes to mind? May be a football or hockey team? or simply a group of professionals working together for a common objective? Have a flock of “V” shaped birds flying in the mid of the air ever come to mind as a working team?
Personality is an important consideration in team building. Think about how people have different individual work styles and how they work differently in a group differs! Understanding how you and your team members tend to work can help each of us to work t ogether more effectively. Myer-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is one popular way to discover personalities and its effect on team work. Personality is an important consideration in team building based on three questions. First is how people work individually differs. Second how people work in a group differs. And lastly understanding how you tend to work and how others tend to work can help each of us to work together more effectively.
Extraversion or(‘E’) in MBTI has its focus on the outer world and gets energized from interacting with others. Their energy drains when they are alone. Introversion (‘I’), on the other hand, has its focus on the inner world and gives up energy when interacting with others. Their energy recharges when they are able to separate from others into a private space or activity.
