I chose this topic today because these days, planning a traditional wedding is one of the top things on my list. I am originally from Pakistan and come from a family which I always thought was very liberal but to my surprise after hearing about my engagement have turned very traditional!! And so at the completion of my presentation the audience will have an insight into what goes on in a traditional Pakistani wedding. While I joke about it being long and tiring, a Pakistani wedding is actually a very beautiful and colorful event. A Pakistani wedding “officially” starts about a week before the actual wedding date and the different ceremonies differ from region to region and even family to family. For example in my family, the first “ceremony” is a dinner where only the females are invited, the day is started off by a prayer asking God for everything to go smoothly and as planned, and of course to shower His blessings on the bride and groom. Promptly following this prayer, the bride is brought out, all clad in yellow, and the women proceed to feed her sweets and give her their love and blessings. Of course the groom is no where to be seen at this event, and the couple are not allowed to see each other till their wedding day. The 2nd and 3rd days are small gatherings called Dholakis in which the bride’s friends and family are invited to come over to her parents place to sing and dance and help the bride pack her stuff and prepare for the big move to her soon to be husband’s house. The 4th day, called the Mehndi is the day when the groom’s side comes over with the bride’s outfit and jewelry for the wedding day. The traditional colors for this day normally are bright yellows and greens and pinks.. The bride is brought out and all the women get together to paint her hands with Henna, which is a dye, painted on her hands and feet.
