India Vision 2020 was initially a document prepared by the Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) of India's Department of Science and Technology under the chairmanship of Kalam and a team of 500 experts.[1] The plan is further detailed in the book India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium, which Kalam co authored with Dr. Y.S. Rajan. Kalam described the plan as follows:[2]

"Transforming the nation into a developed country, five areas in combination have been identified based on India's core competence, natural resources and talented manpower for integrated action to double the growth rate of GDP and realize the Vision of Developed India." The five areas are:

* Agriculture and food processing
* Infrastructure with reliable electric power
* Education and Healthcare
* Information and Communication Technology
* Critical technologies and strategic industries

Agriculture
Agriculture also called farming or husbandry is the cultivation of animals, plants, fungi, and other life forms for food, fiber,biofuel and other products used to sustain life.[1] Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization, whereby farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that nurtured the development of civilization. The study of agriculture is known as agricultural science. Agriculture generally speaking refers to human activities, although it is also observed in certain species of ant and termite.[2][3] The word agriculture is the English adaptation of Latin agricultūra, from ager, "a field",[4]and cultūra, "cultivation" in the strict sense of "tillage of the soil".[5] Thus, a literal reading of the word yields "tillage of fields".
