The Portuguese immigrants have chosen to immigrate to the United States in hopes of living better and peaceful lives. Over many years, the Portuguese have crossed the Atlantic Ocean with hopes and dreams of pursuing a happiness that is so rarely heard of.
The Portuguese Immigrants entered the United States over the years. The first of this group to come over were the men. They came over in the 1820s. These men worked on the whaling ships and in the factories. These men had hopes of eventually sending for their wives and children. Working on these American ships gave them the opportunity to see the Americas and not have to serve in the Portuguese military. (Portuguese Immigration, n.d., para. 3) The second group came in the early 1900s. The numbers of Portuguese immigrants doubled, because of a severe drought and a revolution that came between 1904 and 1910. (Portuguese Immigration, n.d., para. 3)
After great numbers of Portuguese immigrated to the United States, the government decided to change its laws. In 1917, the United States government required that everyone over the age of 16 wanting to become a United States citizen must be able to read and write some of the English language in order to reside in this country. This was the first of many restrictions placed against the Portuguese. These restrictions seemed to make the Portuguese afraid to come to the United States. (Portuguese Immigration, n.d. para. 5)
In 1924 the United States government made the United States Immigration Act. It was designed as a quota system, thus allowing only small numbers of immigrants to

come over and become citizens. Forty-one years later, in 1965, the United States government set up the Immigration and Nationality Act which dismissed the quota system
