Abstract
This is an introduction to the history, culture, business practices, and green initiatives of India. This is a guide for background information and tips on how to succeed when doing business in India.

India: A Brief History

India is a country located inferior to China, with a population of 1.22 billion. According to the 2011 census, India's population grew to 1.2 billion in the past decade by 181 million people. In 2010, India's GDP was the top 4 in the world. In 1950 India completed their constitution and became an independent nation. India is a federation with a parliamentary system governed under the constitution of India. India is divided into 28 states and 7 union territories.

The Capital of India is New Delhi and the largest city is Mumbai. The most common languages in India are English and Hindi. Here are a few random facts about India: 1. The National emblem is called the Lion Capital. It represents Buddha and his proclamation of peace and emancipation to the four quarters of the universe, that’s why there are four lions.

2. The National Flower is the Lotus. It is seen as beautiful and simple and also has folklore surrounding it.

3. The National Tree is the Fig Tree because its roots and branches seem never ending. The people in India see this tree as immortal. They call the tree a Banyan Tree.

4. The Currency in India is the Indian Rupee. One rupee is worth 0.02 US Dollars.

India: A Booming Economy

Research suggests that India is one of the fastest growing developed countries in the world. The process of globalization has been a huge part of the recent economic progress made by India. Globalization has played a major role in export-led growth, leading to the enlargement of the job market in India. One of the major forces of globalization in India has been in the growth of outsourced IT and business process outsourcing services. India is number one in outsourcing for IT jobs in the world. This is a graph that shows why/what type of companies choose India for IT outsourcing; it saves them money.

This boom in IT outsourcing is creating more jobs in India everyday. Most people who work in India, who are native, are new graduates. There are roughly 40,000 expatriates working India. This number is steadily rinsing as the economy and country continues to grow.

India: Business Etiquette

When doing business in India it is important for one to know the social norms and cultural customs of this country. Some of the things that you should always remember when going to India are: * Indians have trouble saying no; they will either agree with you or say “Maybe”, “We’ll see”, or “I’ll try” * Time management is NOT at upmost importance. You will expect delays in meetings and with paperwork. * They will always call you by your full name including academic title. They will expect you to do the same. * The traditional form of greeting is the Namaste. You put your hands together in prayer-like gesture and slightly bow while saying Namaste. This means welcome or hello. * Always address the oldest person first. When this isn’t done it is seen as very rude and some Indians will take offense. * Feet are considered dirty and you must never touch your feet or touch someone with your feet. If you do always apologize. * Never touch the top of someone’s head in India. They see the head as the house of the soul and when you touch the head they believe you can tarnish the soul. * Never give someone something with the left hand. It is considered unclean and they will not accept anything if it is touched by the left hand.

Remembering these tips can help you greatly when doing business in India. They can help you prevent big mistakes in the Indian business world but can also make you look better when you know what you Should and Shouldn’t do.
