As more people connect to the Internet in India, time spent social networking is exploding on sites like Facebook and Orkut. It's one of the primary motivations for going online. In both rural and urban areas, social networking is a key driver of use. The most popular site in India is now Facebook, which has seen its market share grow by almost 50% from 2010 and 2011. This article looks at five key social networks in India.
1. Facebook
52million users in India
After overtaking Orkut, Facebook continues to dominate social networking space in India. Facebook is now the third most visited site in India after Google and its Indian version Google India. Facebook is growing at an enormous rate in India and is taking Indian market seriously, making various partnerships with telecom companies to make the use of Facebook free for users from India. It is also using TV ads and other media to reach new target population.
2. LinkedIn
8 million users in India
LinkedIn is a social networking site which provides professionals a platform to network, share ideas and information. LinkedIn is the world’s most popular professional networking site in the world and second most popular in India. It is also one of the most visited sites in the country according to Alexa. In India, LinkedIn got the second most used professional social networking site based on Alexa ranking, reaching the 11th spot.
3. Orkut
4 million users in India
After losing the top spot to Facebook, Google-woned Orkut has declined rapidly. Many users have switched to Facebook, and even gone on to delete their Orkut account. However, this was not always the case. There used to be no competition of Orkut and it was first and best choice for every newbie. Despite its decline, the Alexa ranking of Orkut is 17 in India and it is remains one the most popular social networking site in India.
4. Twitter
