I’m writing to you to express my excitement about Jamaica’s 50th independence that as you know just passed us this year 2012 on the 6th of August and Trinidad and Tobago on the 27th of August. I just found myself reflecting on the long way both countries have come since their independence from Britain in 1962 and I had to share the joy and pride that I have being a part of this as a Caribbean woman.
Both islands are just a spec on globe yet they have made tremendous achievements. Many persons outside of the Caribbean community may not even be aware as to what the fuss is all about, and why our independence is worth celebrating. Well it is simple, as a people coming from the brutal historical roots of slavery were black men and women suffered physical and mental abuse; in thousands we were once bounded by shackled on our feet and sardined inhumanly. We were denied the freedom of movement, denied the freedom of speech, denied the freedom of peaceful assembly; we were denied the basic fundamental rights. That dreadful period scarred the Caribbean people, even after the abolition of slavery and gaining independence, the scares left a sense of injustices, social, economically and politically on Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. As an intelligent, talented and creative Caribbean people we were able to survive that period. After we were granted independence, we continued to exercise our creativity, talent and intelligence.
Jamaica has a world renowned presence in the music industry. We established our own genre of music with reggae and dancehall, originated in Jamaica and Trinidad has calypso and soca music and steal pans that drive Carnivals celebration worldwide. Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago have many reputable some Artists whose work can be found in Art galleries around the world and in some of their own High quality art galleries such as the National Art Gallery in Kingston the capital of Jamaica and Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago.
