Increasing Crime Rates

The increase in crime rate is a major source of insecurity and fear today. It is a matter of utmost concern that the crime rate has shown an increase up to 15 per cent in few months in the city of Lahore. The situation is alarming as it is affecting all spheres of everyday life. The main reasons of increase in criminal activities are linked to political, environmental, economic, social and moral values. The political link is one of the causes as there are elements among parties who want to let the other down thus creating a situation of violence and settling scores. Majority of the people carry weapons and do not hesitate to display their use as a sign of power. There is no check on who carries and whether they are legal. People feel very optimistic on hearing that the police force has been increased, well trained and provided latest weapons. But in spite of all this the street crimes, target killings and other tragic incidents are continuously taking place. There is also problem related to communication between the law enforcement agencies and the people. Due to fear, both of police high handedness and of the criminals, people feel insecure and do not cooperate to provide any information about the suspicious activities of an individual or group in their locality. This deprives the security agencies to act timely. Another reason is that majority of us has lost faith in our judicial system. Those who are arrested in heinous crimes are set free due to loopholes in the evidence. The culprits do not fear punishment. They have links and support and even if found guilty there is no death penalty and they serve punishment for some time and then again organize themselves and continue challenging the authorities. The social system itself is responsible for so many problems leading to undesirable acts. It is the strong social and value system which binds us together.
