Inclusion of Women's Private Work in National Accounts
Position: Women's private work at home that is naturally suited for the family, is an essential integral component for the functioning of society and the economy, and as such should be included in the calculation of national accounts, for its exclusion contributes to the nation's continued poverty.
As far back as one can remember the female was always regarded as being deficient and inferior to man. Aristotle (384-322 BC) claimed that "The female is a female by virtue of a certain lack of qualities; we should regard the female nature as afflicted with a natural defectiveness" whilst there was a notion in the 17th century that the present spelling of the word female was due to the mistaken belief that the word was derived from male and that the fe was only a prefix. (Mills 1989, 79). Strangely enough the same notion can be seen to be applied to the word woman, whereupon people could claim that it was derived from the word man and that the wo is only a prefix. Then again it is interesting to realise that the original spelling of the word 'female' was femal (14th Century) and that it was used to denote precious stones which were inferior or different from their counterparts on account of their paleness or some colour flaw; while male was applied to a variety of material and immaterial things, but always to denote their superiority, strength or greatness. (Mills 1989, 80). This reputation and substandard connotation has continued to tarnish women's positioning and status up-to the present day.
